Fantasie on “La Campanella” for Harp solo Yo Saito

[ Introduction ]
This piece draws inspiration from the third movement of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2, the rondo called “La Campanella” and was written for solo performance on the harp.

The word “campanella” means “bell” in Italian. In this arrangement, I have incorporated the effect of the bell and the beautiful arpeggio played by the violin, seeking a sound suitable for playing the harp. Though not found in Liszt’s arrangement of “La Campanella” for piano, this arrangement has an elegant section like a beautiful dream as well as an aggressive pulsive section, providing for various possibilities of expression with the harp.

When performing, my hope is that the harp would create a sound like a violin solo playing a lilting legato. In addition, the mastery of the harp can be fully presented in the intermediate cadenza that imitates a harp solo in Tchaikovsky’s ballet music. Playing excerpts from this, you may introduce the instrument and even a beginner may perform it.

My hope is that many people, both amateurs and professionals, will add this new arrangement for the harp to their repertoire.

Spring, 2020.
